Okay, this is one of those stories that I think is really worth talking about.

Newburgh Free Academy has just opened its brand-new Career and Technical Education Center… and let me tell you, this place is pretty incredible.

We’re talking about a $75 million, 132,000-square-foot facility — and it’s not your typical school building.

You walk in, and there are automotive bays, culinary kitchens, welding stations, cosmetology, pet grooming, fashion design and media production. I mean, they’ve got a little bit of everything.

And I love the idea behind this, because not every kid learns the same way.

Some students love sitting in a classroom, taking notes and hitting the books. Other kids? They want to get their hands dirty. They want to build something, fix something or create something.

And this center gives them that opportunity.

About 500 juniors and seniors will use the facility this year, and eventually, it can accommodate up to 1,000 students.

There are 17 career and technical education programs being offered, and it’s not just about learning a trade. They’re also teaching things like entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

So you’re not only learning how to do the job — you’re learning what it takes to build a career. Maybe even build your own business.

And that’s really the bigger goal here. For some students, this training can help them go directly into the workforce after graduation. For others, it can put them on the path toward professional licenses or further education.

But there’s something else I really like about this project...it’s about keeping young people here in the Hudson Valley.

Think about that...a student goes through one of these programs, graduates, gets a job, maybe starts a business and stays right here.

Then they hire somebody else from the community. And that person stays. And suddenly, you’re creating this cycle of opportunity.

This is a community that has dealt with some real economic challenges. It seems like we're bouncing from one heat wave to the next, with little relief in between.

The good news? According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, fall could bring a welcome change.

The Almanac is forecasting a cooler-than-average and wetter-than-average autumn for New York State in 2026. That means after months of scorching temperatures, the Hudson Valley could be in for crisp mornings, colorful foliage, and plenty of sweater weather.

The forecast calls for below-average temperatures along with above-average rainfall, making this year's fall feel more like the classic Northeast autumn many of us have been waiting for. While the extra rain could mean keeping an umbrella handy for football games, apple picking, and pumpkin patch visits, it could also provide some relief after a hot, dry summer.

For Hudson Valley residents, cooler temperatures may arrive earlier than usual, helping kick off one of the region's favorite seasons. From scenic drives through changing leaves to local harvest festivals and cider donuts, it could be the kind of fall many of us have been hoping for.

Of course, long-range forecasts are just that—forecasts. Weather patterns can change, and no prediction is guaranteed months in advance. But after this stretch of relentless heat, we'll gladly take a little optimism.

So hang in there. to get excited.

Halloween Horror Nights is officially returning this fall, and one of the biggest attractions will be a brand-new haunted house inspired by the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

According to Universal, guests will step directly into the eerie town of Hawkins and come face-to-face with some of the series’ most terrifying creatures. Expect encounters with Demogorgons, dark twists from the Upside Down, and a showdown against the show's ultimate villain, Vecna.

For longtime fans of the hit series, this could be one of the closest experiences yet to actually living inside the world of Stranger Things. Universal says the attraction will feature immersive environments and cinematic scares designed to recreate key moments from the show's final chapter.

And because no trip to Hawkins would be complete without a little nostalgia, guests will also be able to shop for exclusive '80s-inspired merchandise throughout the park.

Halloween Horror Nights runs from Sept. 3 through Nov. 1, and Universal promises more haunted house announcements are still on the way. The kind where community, nature, and just a little adventure all come together.

The day kicks off with volunteer trail cleanups along the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and the Kingston Greenline. It’s a chance to roll up your sleeves, meet some great people, and help keep some of our most beautiful local spaces looking their best. And honestly, there’s something pretty satisfying about knowing you made a small impact on a place so many of us enjoy every day.

If you’re more into exploring than cleaning, there’s a tree walk led by naturalist Tom O’Dowd that dives into the incredible variety of species right along the trail. Expect a lineup of short films from around the world that capture the grit, beauty, and pure emotion of trail running. Whether you’re a runner or just someone who appreciates a good story, this is the kind of event that sticks with you.

Even better—proceeds support the Wallkill Valley Land Trust, so just by showing up, you’re helping protect the very trails you spent the day enjoying.

Whether you’re in it for the fresh air, the community, the learning, or the inspiration… this is your day. That means every DMV office will be closed and all online services will be shut down as part of a massive system upgrade.

Starting February 13 at 2 p.m., DMV branches across the state will close. They won’t reopen until the morning of February 18. During that time, you won’t be able to process transactions online either.

Why the shutdown? Believe it or not, some of the DMV’s computer systems date back to 1968. Yes — nearly six decades old.

DMV Deputy Commissioner Lisa Koumjian says the current system is incredibly difficult to update and modernize. So instead of patching it yet again, they’re doing a full overhaul. Technicians will use the five-day window to consolidate 30 million records from multiple outdated systems into one streamlined platform.

Right now, employees sometimes have to move through eight to ten different systems just to complete one task. The new setup will bring everything into one unified system.

So what does that mean for you?

Officials say once the new platform is up and running, customers should notice shorter wait times, better efficiency inside offices, and more services available online.

Bottom line: If your license, registration, or any other DMV matter can’t wait, take care of it before February 13 at 2 p.m. Otherwise, you’ll have to sit tight until the 18th.

And as always, be careful online — the DMV is also warning about a rise in scam texts linking to fake DMV websites.
