Rare Bull Moose Spotted in Putnam County

Well, here's something you don't see every day in the Hudson Valley…a MOOSE! And we're not talking about a little one!

A large bull moose has been spotted roaming eastern Putnam County near Starr Ridge Road in Brewster, just about half a mile from the North Salem town line.

Yes, an actual MOOSE hanging out in our backyard!

Moose sightings are pretty rare in this part of New York, although the state's Department of Environmental Conservation estimates the statewide population could reach as many as 900.

And while this guy might look like he'd make a great selfie opportunity, wildlife officials say KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

October is part of moose breeding season, which means these massive animals can be especially unpredictable and aggressive.

So, if you're driving around Brewster or North Salem, keep your eyes open. You never know what might be crossing the road!

Pumpkin Valley In The Hudson

The Best Fall Spots

As we continue to delve deeper into fall, pumpkin picking spots can be overwhelming to find since the Hudson Valley just has so many awesome ones to choose from. Luckily for you, I’ve organized some of the best (in no particular order) places to pick your Halloween pumpkins this October.

Fishkill Farms in Fishkill, NY.
Fishkill Farms is a 270-acre apple orchard and vegetable farm located in East Fishkill, New York, that has been in the Morgenthau family for over 100 years (via their website). Pumpkin picking is by reservation only through Sunday, November 1st at Fishkill Farms!

Soons Orchards in New Hampton, NY.
When their farm started as a fledgling dairy with a smattering of fruit trees over 100 years ago, few farmers sold directly to the public. 112 years later, the 4th generation– Jeff, Laura and Sharon are back at the farm. U-Pick Pumpkins are every weekend in October from “10:30ish to 4ish.”

Pennings Farm Market in Warwick, NY.
Pennings Farm operates nearly 100 acres of pristine farmland in the historic Hudson Valley town of Warwick, NY. For more than 40 years, Pennings Farm Market has been a steadfast retailer of locally grown produce under the attentive ownership of Steve and Jill Pennings. (via their website). By reservation only and open weekends.

Barton Orchards in Poughquag, NY.
A 180-acre, family-owned and operated apple orchard, Barton Orchards is more than just a farm– with beautiful grounds, modern event spaces, and authentic Hudson Valley charm, they offer a place for families and friends to gather, celebrate, and enjoy the orchard experience (via their website). U-Pick is free entry on weekdays and by reservation on weekends.

Jones Farm in Cornwall, NY.
Located in Cornwall, New York, Jones Farm is a destination for foodies and shoppers alike! One of the few surviving family farms in the Hudson Valley, Jones Farm offers an array of homegrown vegetables. Pick-Your-Own Pumpkins is from Wednesday-Sunday 10am-4pm (via their website).

DuBois Farms in Highland, NY.
DuBois Farm is voted best Pick-Your-Own in the Hudson Valley with free admission and a plentiful supply of pumpkins– this is no surprise. Open every day from 10am-5pm. Join them October 17th & 18th for a Pumpkin Festival.

Join K104 at DuBois Farm this Halloween, October 31st, from 1-3pm!

Okay, THIS is one way to make science class a whole lot more interesting!

Forget boring old textbooks for a minute — students in the Hudson Valley are getting the chance to literally dig into prehistoric history after the skeletal remains of a mastodon were discovered in an Orange County backyard.

Yep… a mastodon. As in a giant, prehistoric relative of the elephant that once roamed New York thousands of years ago.

Researchers from SUNY Orange and the New York State Museum have been working on the excavation, and they’ve already uncovered some pretty incredible pieces of the animal, including 11 ribs, several vertebrae, and bones from its feet.

And here’s the really cool part: SUNY Orange students aren't just standing around watching the experts do all the work.

They’re getting their hands dirty!

Students have been involved in fieldwork and laboratory analysis, giving them real-world experience in everything from excavation and research to examining and documenting the remains. It's the kind of hands-on experience you just can't get from a PowerPoint presentation.

And apparently, the prehistoric homework isn't finished yet.

SUNY Orange plans to have student volunteers help clean and conserve the mastodon remains, giving them an opportunity to help preserve this incredibly rare discovery for future researchers and generations to come.

Imagine being able to say, "Yeah, I helped uncover a mastodon."

Not exactly your average college résumé bullet point!

The discovery is a pretty amazing reminder that prehistoric history isn't always hiding in some far-off museum. Sometimes, it's literally buried in someone's backyard right here in the Hudson Valley.

So, if you're a student at SUNY Orange, keep an eye out. Your next great learning opportunity might be sitting under a pile of dirt — and it could be several thousand years old!

Move over, textbooks. The mastodon is officially taking over class!

This past Sunday headlined Warwick's annual Applefest event that filled its streets with the aroma of fall.

Orange County’s largest festival of the year took place on Sunday, October 4th, 2026 and took over the legendary town of Warwick right off of Rt 94.

It was held from 9am-5pm with 150+ craft vendors, 75+ food vendors, 4 stages with live music, and apple pie baking & eating contests.

I was even there! They had awesome coffee, apple cider donuts, and of course: apples. There were merch stands and even vendors selling gourmet pesto and pickles. With so much to do in one day, no wonder it is the biggest yearly festival for the county.

They are “continually named by travel, tourism, local newspapers, major media outlets, and local residents as the MUST ATTEND FAMILY FRIENDLY festival of the year!” via their website.

A lot of creative vendors took advantage of the 8 hours by selling their special, hand-crafted jewelry pieces made of silver, gold, wood, beads, and more.

The Applefest showcased young musical talent in their live acts. I caught live acts performing old tracks like “Carry On My Wayward Son,” “Basket Case,” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

It was a perfect autumn day for the family. But, if you missed last Sunday, come join Skywalker at a similar event from 1-3pm at DuBois Farms in Highland this Sunday, October 11th!

If you’re looking for a new place to enjoy the beauty of the Hudson Valley this fall, there’s a great new spot to check out in Highland Falls.

The Highland Falls Preserve is officially open, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore 32 acres of rocky bluffs, mossy forests, wildlife, and beautiful views of the Hudson River.

And the best part? It’s just a 10-minute walk from downtown Highland Falls.

The preserve features a scenic loop trail that’s just under a mile long. Along the way, you’ll find rocky ledges and forests filled with pitch pine, maple, and oak. Keep your eyes—and ears—open for some of the local wildlife, including bright yellow pine warblers.

Getting the preserve ready for the public was truly a community effort. Volunteers, including cadets from West Point and local scouts, contributed nearly 500 hours of work and moved more than 19,000 pounds of stone to create 26 steps leading up to a picnic area.

The land also has a pretty cool history. It was once part of the Roe family estate, connecting the preserve to Highland Falls’ rich Hudson River and military heritage.

The preserve officially opened October 3 during Highland Falls’ 120th anniversary celebration, complete with a guided walk, community meal, drum circle, and nature-inspired art.

So, if you’re looking for an easy outdoor adventure this fall, grab the family, lace up your walking shoes, and head to Highland Falls Preserve.

It’s free, open year-round, and available from dawn to dusk.

While a Nor'easter hit areas of the Hudson Valley this past weekend, we had a major surprise as well. Barstool's founder Dave Portnoy made his way through to rate some of the best pizzerias in Dutchess. Two of them we know for sure were Pipinelli's in Poughkeepsie and Momo's in Fishkill. El Presidente knows where to go for some good pizza and he did just that with his ONE BITE pizza reviews.

If you've seen the videos then you know...One Bite everyone knows the rules! Taken from one slice of a large regular pie. One bite ends up usually being the whole slice and we're here for it. Each review gets a score between 1 and 10 on a strict point scale. No flop and crisp gets major points for Dave. Now we wait to see what the final scores were but Portnoy should know I am the pizza guy in the Hudson valley so next time maybe let me tag along and rate it with him. Damn that would be awesome!!

Hey Dave Portnoy, make sure you hit up the K104 studio and bring Paulie Feva with you next time!

OK that was just me shooting my shot.....ya never know!

Stomp, Sip & Have Some Fall Fun

No plans this weekend? Now you do! Grab your friends and family and head to Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville for one of the most fun fall festivities... GRAPE STOMPING!

Brotherhood Winery has been part of the Hudson Valley for nearly 200 years. Founded in 1839, it’s known as America’s Oldest Winery (in continuous operation) so they definitely know a thing or two about making wine! The large vineyard was founded in 1835 by John Jaques, an elder in the Washington Presbyterian Church, who first produced wine for sacramental use. Now... just a few (short) years later, Brotherhood is run by Cesar Baeza and the families of Luis Chadwick and Pablo Castro, who have deep roots in the famous winegrowing region of Maule Valley in Chile.

You can visit the winery year round for tours and tastings... but fall is where the fun begins!

Every Saturday and Sunday through mid-October, you can head to Brotherhood and literally stomp grapes the old fashioned way... with your feet!

Yep… you heard that right! The stompers get to take off their shoes, jump into a barrel of grapes and see how much juice you can squeeze out! Stompers are paired with a mucker, who helps collect the grape juice in hopes of collecting the most! Whoever collects the most out of the three teams wins a small Grape Stomping Champion bottle of wine... unless they're under 21... then they win a pencil that smells like grapes. Pretty much the same thing, right?!

The weekly Grape Stomp is fun for the whole family, so if you'd like to give it a shot-- come spend a day at the winery!

And here's the best part… at least in my opinion...

K104's Jimmy Lyles (that's me!) will be at Brotherhood Winery EVERY SUNDAY from NOON–4PM to DJ the Grape Stomp!

So come say hello, bring your friends, bring the family and get ready for a Sunday Funday!

Come stomp, sip and have some fun with me this fall at Brotherhood, America's Oldest Winery in Washingtonville!

Fall is officially here, and from Westchester to Orange and Dutchess Counties, there’s a LOT happening!

Westchester gets spooky! The legendary Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is back at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson through November 8, featuring more than 7,000 hand-carved jack o’lanterns. Sleepy Hollow also goes all-in on Halloween with Twilight Village, Irving’s Legend, ghostly experiences and plenty of Headless Horseman fun.

How about some '90s with your fall foliage? The Sleepy Hollow Music Festival takes over Kingsland Point Park October 3 with Everclear, The Smithereens with Marshall Crenshaw, Fastball, Sophie B. Hawkins and more.

History comes alive, too. REV FEST 250 happens October 24–25 at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. More than 500 living historians will recreate life during the American Revolution, culminating with a large-scale reenactment of the Battle of White Plains. Admission is free.

Orange County means Applefest! One of the biggest fall traditions in our area, Warwick Applefest returns Sunday, October 4. We're talking more than 150 craft vendors, 75+ food vendors, four stages of live music and, naturally, apple pie contests.

And if your perfect fall day involves actually picking the apples yourself, Orange County has plenty of orchards and farms to explore, including Lawrence Farms Orchards in Newburgh. If you're looking for something a little scarier, Pure Terror Scream Park in Monroe can take care of that Halloween itch.

Dutchess County brings the farm-fresh fall vibes. Apple and pumpkin picking is happening at spots including Fishkill Farms in Hopewell Junction, Barton Orchards in Poughquag, Meadowbrook Farm in Wappingers Falls, Greig Farm in Red Hook and several other farms throughout the county.

Head to Beacon on October 18 for the Beacon Sloop Club Pumpkin Festival at Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park. Pumpkins, food, Hudson River views and even free sails aboard the Woody Guthrie, weather permitting — and the festival itself is free.

And here's one that's about as Hudson Valley fall as you can get: the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival returns to the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck October 17–18 with hundreds of vendors, sheep, fiber arts, demonstrations, workshops and plenty more.

First Time In The Line

Billy Joe’s line dancing on the Newburgh waterfront

Recently, I have grown to love line dancing. And while Billy Joe’s Ribworks in Newburgh plays lots of country music, they sneak in pop and rock music quite often in their set. Songs as old as “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson and “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins are some of Billy's staples.

It is important to note that country music has made a significant pop-culture crossover in recent years.

Songs like “Choosin’ Texas” just surpassed Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” for the most weeks consecutively at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at 23 weeks. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey is all over the radio too right now. Both of which are weekly rotations at Billy’s.

My first time at Billy Joe’s for line dancing was scary and exciting all at the same time. You walk into the line with your head turned looking at some random person’s half-right moves with yours lagging behind by quite a noticeable amount. Some songs like “Wagon Wheel” or “Kerosene” are always played and easy for beginners to hop in and learn on the spot.

As we move into the colder months, line dancing indoors is still just as fun with their cozy environment and decorative, seasonal walls filled with lights and music.

After my first few times, I started to learn harder songs but they’re my absolute favorite now. “Burn It to the Ground” and “Honky Tonk Hardwood Floors” seem impossible but they become some of the most fun dances you’ll do. I suggest breaking the songs into parts as they become very repetitive after the first 15 seconds. This makes visualizing what to do next very easy when you’ve done it the same way for the past 2 minutes of the song.

I promise it is not as intimidating as it seems. I hope to see you and your moves on the waterfront in Newburgh every Tuesday night from 8pm-11pm and every Friday night from 9pm-12:30am.

Newburgh's New Career and Technical Center

Newburgh is giving students a whole new way to prepare for their future.

Okay, this is one of those stories that I think is really worth talking about.

Newburgh Free Academy has just opened its brand-new Career and Technical Education Center… and let me tell you, this place is pretty incredible.

We’re talking about a $75 million, 132,000-square-foot facility — and it’s not your typical school building.

You walk in, and there are automotive bays, culinary kitchens, welding stations, cosmetology, pet grooming, fashion design and media production. I mean, they’ve got a little bit of everything.

And I love the idea behind this, because not every kid learns the same way.

Some students love sitting in a classroom, taking notes and hitting the books. Other kids? They want to get their hands dirty. They want to build something, fix something or create something.

And this center gives them that opportunity.

About 500 juniors and seniors will use the facility this year, and eventually, it can accommodate up to 1,000 students.

There are 17 career and technical education programs being offered, and it’s not just about learning a trade. They’re also teaching things like entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

So you’re not only learning how to do the job — you’re learning what it takes to build a career. Maybe even build your own business.

And that’s really the bigger goal here. For some students, this training can help them go directly into the workforce after graduation. For others, it can put them on the path toward professional licenses or further education.

But there’s something else I really like about this project...it’s about keeping young people here in the Hudson Valley.

Think about that...a student goes through one of these programs, graduates, gets a job, maybe starts a business and stays right here.

Then they hire somebody else from the community. And that person stays. And suddenly, you’re creating this cycle of opportunity.

This is a community that has dealt with some real economic challenges. So when you invest $75 million into a facility designed to give young people skills, training and opportunities, that’s more than just a construction project. That’s an investment in the future.

The project was approved back in 2019. Construction started in 2024. And now, the doors are open.

And I think it can be a real beacon of hope for Newburgh that gives students options by giving them a chance to find something they’re good at.and giving them the tools to turn that talent into a career.

maybe, just maybe, giving them a reason to say, “I can build my future right here.”

That’s pretty powerful... that’s why this new Career and Technical Education Center is something the entire Hudson Valley should be excited about.

If you could use a little help filling the fridge, there’s a great opportunity coming up in Newburgh this Friday.

The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is teaming up with the Regional Food Bank to host a free food distribution on Friday, August 21. The event will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the lower lobby of the Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus.

And this isn’t just a box of shelf-stable stuff. Fresh food will be available, and organizers say bags are expected to include a pretty solid variety of items—eggs, yogurt, tuna, macaroni and cheese, peaches, onions, almond milk, tortillas, cereal and more.

The food will be available to members of the community on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you’re planning to go, keep that in mind. Once the food is gone, the distribution is over.

It’s one of those simple community efforts that can make a real difference, especially with the cost of groceries these days. The school district and Regional Food Bank are making sure local families have access to fresh and nutritious food at no cost.

So, Newburgh, if you or someone you know could use a little extra help this week, Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at NFA Main Campus is the place to be.

If you're looking for something incredible to do this weekend, look to the skies!

The New York Air Show is making its return to the Hudson Valley with two action-packed days at Orange County Airport in Montgomery on Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd, 2026. This year's event is even more special as it joins in the celebration of America's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The stars of the show? The world-famous U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who will headline the weekend with their jaw-dropping precision flying demonstrations. If you've never seen them perform in person, prepare to be amazed. Their high-speed formations and incredible aerial maneuvers are something you have to experience firsthand.

Before the Air Show officially takes off, fans will have a unique opportunity to meet members of the Thunderbirds during a special Meet & Greet on Friday, July 31st, at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor. It's a rare chance to meet the pilots and crew behind one of the nation's premier aerial demonstration teams while honoring the sacrifices of America's service members.

Whether you're an aviation enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for an unforgettable family outing, the New York Air Show promises an exciting weekend filled with thrilling performances, patriotic pride, and plenty of memories.

And if your schedule doesn't allow you to make it this year, don't worry. The New York Air Show is already scheduled to return to the Hudson Valley in August 2027, so you'll have another chance to catch all the action.

Have a great time, enjoy the show, and don't forget to keep your eyes on the sky!

If this summer has you feeling like the Hudson Valley has turned into the tropics, you're definitely not alone. It seems like we're bouncing from one heat wave to the next, with little relief in between.

The good news? According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, fall could bring a welcome change.

The Almanac is forecasting a cooler-than-average and wetter-than-average autumn for New York State in 2026. That means after months of scorching temperatures, the Hudson Valley could be in for crisp mornings, colorful foliage, and plenty of sweater weather.

The forecast calls for below-average temperatures along with above-average rainfall, making this year's fall feel more like the classic Northeast autumn many of us have been waiting for. While the extra rain could mean keeping an umbrella handy for football games, apple picking, and pumpkin patch visits, it could also provide some relief after a hot, dry summer.

For Hudson Valley residents, cooler temperatures may arrive earlier than usual, helping kick off one of the region's favorite seasons. From scenic drives through changing leaves to local harvest festivals and cider donuts, it could be the kind of fall many of us have been hoping for.

Of course, long-range forecasts are just that—forecasts. Weather patterns can change, and no prediction is guaranteed months in advance. But after this stretch of relentless heat, we'll gladly take a little optimism.

So hang in there. If The Old Farmer's Almanac is right, those cool autumn breezes may be closer than you think.

Maybe it’s the sight of fireworks reflecting off the Hudson River. Maybe it’s the sound of a hometown parade marching down Main Street. Or maybe it’s knowing that many of the roads, villages, and historic sites we pass every day played a role in America’s fight for independence.

This year, Independence Day celebrations across Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties carry even more significance as communities begin embracing the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary. The result is a holiday weekend packed with fireworks, live music, festivals, family fun, and a renewed appreciation for the history that helped shape our nation.

If you’re already counting down the days until spooky season, Universal Studios Hollywood just gave horror fans a huge reason to get excited.

Halloween Horror Nights is officially returning this fall, and one of the biggest attractions will be a brand-new haunted house inspired by the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

According to Universal, guests will step directly into the eerie town of Hawkins and come face-to-face with some of the series’ most terrifying creatures. Expect encounters with Demogorgons, dark twists from the Upside Down, and a showdown against the show's ultimate villain, Vecna.

For longtime fans of the hit series, this could be one of the closest experiences yet to actually living inside the world of Stranger Things. Universal says the attraction will feature immersive environments and cinematic scares designed to recreate key moments from the show's final chapter.

And because no trip to Hawkins would be complete without a little nostalgia, guests will also be able to shop for exclusive '80s-inspired merchandise throughout the park.

Halloween Horror Nights runs from Sept. 3 through Nov. 1, and Universal promises more haunted house announcements are still on the way. That means horror fans can expect plenty more nightmares before opening night arrives.

Whether you're a die-hard Stranger Things fan or just looking for a reason to scream your way through the fall season, this latest reveal is shaping up to be one of the must-see attractions of Halloween 2026.

So the real question is: Are you brave enough to face Vecna?

As the nation marks Rev250, the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Dutchess County is bringing local history to life through special events and programs across the county.

Through Destination Dutchess and local historical societies, the County has awarded $87,000 in grants to support Revolutionary War-themed experiences, including reenactments, theatrical productions, colonial craft demonstrations, and interactive exhibits.

One of the featured events is RevCon: Dutchess County in the Revolution, taking place June 13 at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. The free event will feature reenactors, scholarly speakers, hands-on displays from local historical societies, and demonstrations showing how supplies were transported during the Revolutionary War.

Other events scheduled throughout the year include the return of the popular Tavern Trail, a multi-town Quaker Meeting House Tour, Freedom Day celebrations in LaGrange, colonial craft demonstrations in East Fishkill, and original plays highlighting local Revolutionary-era figures and stories from Dutchess County's past.

County Executive Sue Serino says the anniversary is a reminder of the values of freedom, justice, and unity that continue to shape America today.

Just a few weeks ago Justin Bieber was seen in Millbrook and now wow, another huge celebrity sighting right here in the Hudson Valley!

This time, Jon Bon Jovi was spotted in Kingston, New York over the weekend. Nope, not rocking a stage — he was hitting the tennis courts at Break Point Tennis Academy in Ulster County. Imagine booking a court for the day… and Bon Jovi is playing right next to you!

Break Point Tennis Academy went on to thank the rocker for stopping by adding "Great having @bonjovi at @breakpointennisny this week. It’s a pleasure having him at the club.

It really feels like celebrities are everywhere in the Hudson Valley lately. Between actors, musicians, comedians, and major sports stars being spotted all over the area, the Hudson Valley has definitely become a celebrity hotspot.

The market will run every Saturday through November 21 (excluding July 4), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shoppers can expect a vibrant mix of seasonal produce, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, and handmade products from local farms and makers across the Hudson Valley.
