If you drive across the Bear Mountain Bridge, get ready to see some major work getting underway soon.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $93.8 million project to replace the aging deck on the 101-year-old Hudson Valley landmark. The bridge was last re-decked back in the 1970s, and with decades of traffic and weather taking their toll, it’s time for an upgrade.
Construction is set to begin this spring and will happen in three phases, with the entire project expected to wrap up by December 2028. The new lightweight concrete deck is designed to handle today’s heavier truck traffic and should last more than 50 years.
The project isn’t just about the road surface. Sidewalks will be widened to five feet on both sides to better meet ADA standards, making it safer for pedestrians, including the many hikers using the bridge as part of the Appalachian Trail.
Plans also include upgraded drainage, modern barriers separating pedestrians from traffic, and four new scenic overlooks where you’ll be able to stop and take in those incredible views of the Hudson River and the surrounding Highlands.
The historic bridge connects Orange and Rockland counties with Putnam and Westchester, and when the work is finished, it should keep this iconic Hudson Valley crossing strong for generations to come.
