If you’re looking for a new place to enjoy the beauty of the Hudson Valley this fall, there’s a great new spot to check out in Highland Falls.
The Highland Falls Preserve is officially open, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore 32 acres of rocky bluffs, mossy forests, wildlife, and beautiful views of the Hudson River.
And the best part? It’s just a 10-minute walk from downtown Highland Falls.
The preserve features a scenic loop trail that’s just under a mile long. Along the way, you’ll find rocky ledges and forests filled with pitch pine, maple, and oak. Keep your eyes—and ears—open for some of the local wildlife, including bright yellow pine warblers.
Getting the preserve ready for the public was truly a community effort. Volunteers, including cadets from West Point and local scouts, contributed nearly 500 hours of work and moved more than 19,000 pounds of stone to create 26 steps leading up to a picnic area.
The land also has a pretty cool history. It was once part of the Roe family estate, connecting the preserve to Highland Falls’ rich Hudson River and military heritage.
The preserve officially opened October 3 during Highland Falls’ 120th anniversary celebration, complete with a guided walk, community meal, drum circle, and nature-inspired art.
So, if you’re looking for an easy outdoor adventure this fall, grab the family, lace up your walking shoes, and head to Highland Falls Preserve.
It’s free, open year-round, and available from dawn to dusk.
